The Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord board is proud to announce that Tristan Lachance, a Grade 6 student at École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph in Sturgeon Falls, has qualified to participate in the Canadian Junior Chess Championship which will be taking place in Surrey, British Columbia, from July 3rd to July 6th.

Tristan earned 5 out of a possible 6 points at the Franco-Ontarian chess tournament, a score never before seen for an unrated chess player.

Tristan was part of a three-team delegation from Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord board that participated in the tournament. The other team members were:

Stas' Milzarek, École Ste-Anne, Mattawa,

Zacharie Lavigne – École La Résurrection, Sturgeon Falls,

Jacob Guénette – École St-Raymond, North Bay,

Bradley Miller – École St-Raymond, North Bay,

Evan Kilroy – École St-Raymond, North Bay,

Dylan Durette – École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph, Sturgeon Falls,

Nicholas Martel - École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph, Sturgeon Falls,

Corey Genesse - École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph, Sturgeon Falls,

Maxime Boileau – École La Résurrection, Sturgeon Falls

Samantha Landry - École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph, Sturgeon Falls,

Brayden Amyot - École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph, Sturgeon Falls.

In all, 33 teams participated in the tournament which took place in Sudbury. The Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord team made up of Dylan Durette, Jacob Guénette, Evan Kilroy, Bradley Miller and Stas’ Milczarek placed 5th while the École élémentaire catholique Saint- Joseph team made up of Dylan Durette, Nicholas Martel, Corey Genesse, Samantha Landry and Brayden Amyot placed 11th. It was the first time that the students participated in a tournament of this kind.
