Tanker turned over on Hwy 63 Update

BayToday just received a call from boaters on Trout Lake who were advised by a police boat as they were docking on Trout Lake not to bath in the lake due to the spill.

North Bay Police Service has advised the public that evacuation of the immediate area of Silverlady Lane and comparable area of Hwy 63 is now mandatory.

Police officers will be checking all residences in the area to ensure compliance.

Meanwhile, OPP released the following update on the tanker spill on Hwy #63:

Earlier today a single tanker tractor trailer collision on Highway # 63 within the Municipality of North Bay has resulted in the driver being transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries and a chemical spill leading to area evacuations of residences.

Highway # 63 near Silver Lady Lane has been closed to all traffic and it is anticipated that this closure will last for quite sometime – possibly into tomorrow.

The tanker was carrying Formaldehyde – a corrosive chemical that is considered a threat to public safety. The recommended distance away from the spill is deemed to be 800 metres (1/2 mile) in all directions; however some of the fumes may become airborne. If anyone feels burning of the eyes, nose or throat please leave the area you are in as it is obvious the air around you may be contaminated and seek medical advice or treatment.

North Bay Fire Department, Ministry of the Environment, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Dangerous Goods, OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigations Unit, North Bay City Police Service and many front line officers are on scene.

BayToday has received a news tip that at about 8:3oam Monday a tanker overturned on Hwy 63, close to Silver Lady Lane.

They report that police, ambulance and fire are on scene.

They also report that chemicals are spilling and there is a foul odour in the air.
