St. Joseph-Scollard Hall students have promised to better support local, small scale farmers following an eye-opening retreat on third world farming with The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. The international development organization was at the school in April to facilitate the event for students in the Grade 12 religion class.

The students discussed successful sustainable farming examples in Africa, particularly in Kenya, versus the negative effects of Western industrial agricultural practices including genetic modification, mass production and resulting gas emissions.

Student Jordy Matheson, said success stories of “back to basics” farming have inspired him. “I didn’t know how much of an impact industrial farming has on everything from cost of food to the quality of food, to the environment. Not everyone takes it seriously so I’ll be talking about local farming to my friends.”

Each student signed Development and Peace’s “Cool the Earth Campaign” Solidarity Action Card at the end of the day to declare their support of local farmers.
