Three Near North District School Board students placed very well at this year’s Skills Canada-Ontario Qualifying Competition held on April 14 at Canadore College.

Congratulations to the following award winners: 1st place in Culinary Arts, Parry Sound High School student Jamie Watkinson 1st place in TV & Video Production (Team), Widdifield Secondary School students Jake Etches & Lamont Abramczyk

“We are very proud of all the students that participated in the qualifying competitions this year. They were great ambassadors of our Board and champions for their individual schools. It is also important to recognize the mentors that have been guiding students in preparation for this event; their time and continued support is most appreciated,” said experiential learning and OYAP coordinator Roy Desjardins.

“We are now preparing for the Provincial competitions in Waterloo. I am confident that our young champions will be equally successful in this arena.”

Award winners, along with several other student competitors that did not need to qualify, will compete in the Ontario Technological Skills Competition on April 30-May 1 in Waterloo. Also competing at the provincial competition are Widdifield students Devon Bisaillon (Restaurant Services), Avery Ross (Web Site Development) and Jordan Sullivan (Graphic Design - Studio Production).

A fantastic effort was put forth by all Near North District School Board students from Parry Sound High School and Widdifield Secondary School.

The award presenter made special mention that the Near North District School Board had a very strong presence this year. Special thanks to staff mentors Blair Cousins, Fred Kenzle and Patti Jenkins at Parry Sound High School as well as Todd Andrews and Melody Evers-Cazabon at Widdifield Secondary School, for their time and dedication.
