Deserving projects win at annual Science Fair

The 50th Annual North Bay Regional Science Fair (NBRSF) was a big success for the more than 140 participants who took part in this year’s competition held at the Elk’s Club.

Over 50 awards including medals, trophies, plaques, certificates and/or cheques were presented for the scientific initiatives of these brilliant students.

The highlight of the Awards ceremony was the designation of those who will represent the region at this year's Canada-Wide Science Fair 2012 to be held in Charlottetown, PEI May 12 to 19. Five projects were selected for this exciting opportunity.

Congratulations go to:

Jamil Merali of West Ferris for his project “”Shoe” Me the Haptic Way” which won the Sci-Tech Ontario Stepping Stone Award (Best in Fair), the Rick Savage Memorial Award, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Award, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Engineering, Computing and Math Sciences category;

Aidan Kehoe of Widdifield for his project “Grow With the Flow” which won the Nipissing University Travel Award, the Ontario Power Generation Renewable Resources Award, the Rotary Club of North Bay Award, the Northgate Shopping Centre Biotech Award, the Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council Award, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Biotechnology category;

Mackenzie Willis of Widdifield for his project “The Effect of Cold Infrared Lasers on Tree Seed Germination” which won the TransCanada Award, the Nipissing Naturalists Award, and a gold medal in the Intermediate Life Science category.

Michaela Crea of St. Huberts for her project “Experimental Grout” which won the Rotary Club of North Bay Award of Excellence, and a gold medal in the Junior Earth and Environment category.

Madeleine Yeomans of Alliance for her project “What Moves Us” which won the North Bay Regional Science Fair Award of Excellence, the Kumon Math and Reading Center Award, and a gold medal in the Junior Life Science category.

Master of Ceremonies, Mitch Belanger, of the Fox, presented an award for the ‘Coolest’ project to Grant Lafontaine of St. Huberts for his project ”Stem Cells Technology – Treating Concussions.”

The Fair was a very successful as Chair, Mike Pearsall commented, "It is very exciting to see the level of enthusiasm, and quality of projects participating in the Science Fair.

The NBRSF Committee wish all these brilliant students continued success with their scientific endeavours.”

The NBRSF anticipate greater regional school participation at future fairs and the realization of the immense value this educational event provides our youth.
