St. Joseph-Scollard Hall’s Eric Rayner took the top spot in the senior category of the annual student Bridge Building Contest hosted last Friday by the local chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario in the school’s auditorium.

Students from four local school boards in grades 5 through 12 sub-mitted small bridges made from only a balsa wood kit and carpenter glue and watched in suspense as local engineers tested each bridge’s carrying ability by adding increments of weight suspended below it until it collapsed.

The event, which coincided with National Engineering Month, aimed to foster innovation by introducing and discussing real life technical issues faced by modern engineers, and gave students the opportunity to interact with local profession-als in a casual, fun-filled atmosphere.

Bridges were judged on craftsmanship, engineering, and loading ability. The results are as follows:

Senior (Grade 9-12)
1. Eric Rayner (SJSH)
2. Donovan Doherty (ESCA)
3. Krista-Lee Sarazin / Katie Hokstad (SJSH)
4. Matt Bennison / Braden Johnston (SJSH)
5. Antoine Pépin (ESCA)

Junior (Grade 5-8)
1. Ash Verge (Marshall Park)
2. Hunter Perry & Hugh Cochrane (Alliance)
3. Ryan Moir / Ethan Redhead (Alliance)
4. Ben Haun & Haden Corbeil (Alliance)
5. Jonathan Marcil (Mother St. Bride)
