On Monday February 20th, Family Day The City of North Bay, Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services Department hosted the opening of the New Circle Lake Centre, 275 Lake Heights Road, North Bay.

The City of North Bay has continued to work on this project for approximately seven years to have a building constructed at Circle Lake Park. Over the past few months the city was presented with an option which was affordable and would provide a facility to the neighborhood. “This resulted in the building you see today” stated Sean Lawlor, City Councillor.

This building will provide a place for community meetings, recreational programs, and family get togethers. The rink portion of the building will provide a warm place for families to put on their skates during the winter months. The Parks, Recreation & Leisure Services staff is looking to operate a youth program at the building this summer.

Circle Lake Park was the birthplace of the Monster Pond Hockey event. The event took place at Circle Lake for its first four years and has as of this year grown and expanded to take place on Lake Nipissing. The neighborhood was very welcoming and jumped in as volunteers to assist with the event while in the park.

The active neighborhood over the years with a stable group of volunteers also provided the Friday night “shack” dances for pre- teens which were very popular. This program was around for over 20 years.

On August 24, 2006, KaBoom playground equipment was installed in partnership with Home Depot. Approximately 200 volunteers, Home Depot staff, neighborhood volunteers and City staff showed up to erect play apparatus in one day. This resulted in the play equipment you see in the park today.

In 2009 the old community building was removed as it was deemed not safe. Over the past few years city staff has worked with the neighborhood to come up with a cost effective solution for the New Circle Lake Centre. This was a reality on Monday.
