The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister for FedNor, today announced an investment of $2 million, through FedNor, to support job creation and support small business development and growth in Northern Ontario in partnership with the Yves Landry Foundation.

"Our Government is committed to working at a grassroots level to support the development, growth and diversification of Northern Ontario's economy," said Minister Clement. "Today's announcement will serve to enhance the North's manufacturing sector through the Yves Landry Foundation, an organization that works to drive improved competitiveness in manufacturing through advanced technology and process education and training."

FedNor funding of $2 million will enable the Yves Landry Foundation to make training investments in support of the Achieving Innovation in Manufacturing Excellence - North (AIMENorth) initiative. This Northern Ontario-wide program will help businesses train or retrain employees in the use of advanced technology, new equipment or processes, as well as new or alternative manufacturing materials.

This contribution is part of a larger investment by the Government of Canada to support manufacturing skills development across the province of Ontario. Today, the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) announced an investment of up to $5 million for the AIME Global program to meet the needs of exporting and export-ready manufacturers in southern Ontario.

"The Yves Landry Foundation has a proud history of working with the Government of Canada to create new opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses," said Karyn Brearley, Executive Director of the Yves Landry Foundation. "FedNor funding will allow us to establish a Northern Ontario presence, which is sure to generate positive economic results for communities and manufacturing businesses throughout the region."

The funding announced today was provided through FedNor's Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that strengthen community economic development, enhance business development and growth and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
