Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced Thursday a grant of up to $127,072 has been awarded to the Near North District School Board for delivery of its Adult Non-Credit Language Training Program for this school year.

As North Bay’s immigrant population grows, so does the Near North District School Board’s Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. In fact, the program has more than doubled its enrolment in the past three years. The multi-level class offers a welcoming environment to learn English and the many facets of Canadian culture.

“I’m pleased at the success this program is having and this funding is recognition of the good work being done by those involved to help newcomers thrive and succeed in our communities here in Nipissing,” said Fedeli.

The ESL Adult Program at Chippewa Secondary School has been part of the Near North District School Board and community for many years, but with the development of initiatives such as the Newcomer Network (NNN) and the opening of the North Bay & District Multicultural Centre, immigrants are discovering the value of living in North Bay and Nipissing.

“Our Board is committed to addressing the increased need for language training. We are pleased that the Province has continued to support our Board to provide such a valuable service for adult immigrants in our community,” said Near North District School Board Director of Education Geof Botting.

The Near North’s Adult ESL Program operates daily Monday to Friday at Chippewa as part of the Continuing Education Programming offered by the Near North District School Board.
