On January 17, 2012, the Canadore College Board of Governors made a decision at its monthly board meeting.

Acting in the best interests of its students, the Board voted against renewing the $280 per year Student Centre Building Fee for the 2012-13 school year.

The Student Centre Building Fee is by far the most costly of all ancillary fees charged to Canadore students, equivalent to 11.5 per cent of the average annual tuition fee.

Almost $2 million has been collected to date.

The Board does not consider the latest proposal for the financing and construction of a new Student Centre to be viable.

It is an unsustainable proposal, the scope and scale of which exceeds the resources of the College.

In the absence of a feasible plan for a new Student Centre, continuing to collect $280 per student per year is not in the best interests of the students.

The Board of Governors has a responsibility to ensure that all fees charged to students are reasonable and appropriate.

The Student Centre Building Fee no longer meets that standard which is why the decision was made to relieve students of this financial burden.

“We would encourage the CSRC to engage in a meaningful dialogue on how to proceed from here,” said Tom Palangio, Board Chair.

“We would support a new Student Centre provided it is of the appropriate scope, that is an affordable and sustainable proposal, and that it would ultimately be of benefit to all Canadore students.”
