Man fined for unlawfully hunting moose in provincial park

A Hurkett, Ontario resident has been fined $1,500 for unlawfully hunting moose in Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Gunnar Hult, plead guilty and has been fined $1,000 for hunting a cow moose without a licence and $500 for hunting in an area closed to hunting within Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Court was told that on October 21, 2010, Wawa conservation officers responded to a complaint relating to two people observed shooting a rifle in an area closed to hunting within Lake Superior Provincial Park. During the investigation it was learned that Gunnar Hult, a member of the Sault Ste Marie Métis Nation of Ontario, had harvested a cow moose on the west side of Lake Superior Provincial Park. This location is an area closed to hunting and was outside of the MNO harvesting area Hult was authorized to hunt in.

Justice of the Peace Jean-Marie Blier heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Wawa, on November 16, 2011.
