Night hunting proves costly for two Barrie-area men

Two Barrie-area men have been fined a total of $2,250 for unlawful hunting moose at night.

Reginald P. Vent of Innisfil and Marc Douglas Gray of Oro-Medonte both pleaded guilty and were fined $1,000 each for hunting at night. In addition, Vent pleaded guilty and was fined $250 for using the headlights of the vehicle he was operating to illuminate a bull moose.

The court heard that in the early morning of October 11, 2011, during an operation to curb night hunting, conservation officers contacted the two men in Eisenhower Township east of Chapleau. Each of the men was in possession of an unencased rifle prior to the legal time of one half-hour before sunrise during the open gun season for moose. They were using the headlights of a vehicle to illuminate a moose.

Justice of the Peace Gilles Lecouteur heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Chapleau, on November 9, 2011.
