This Friday, acclaimed singer-songwriter Matthew Barber will be making a stop in North Bay as part of his nine-day trek across Ontario and Quebec in support of his recently released self-titled album.

The tour, which will feature Polaris long list nominee Louise Burns, is the first in recent years to feature Barber backed by a full band.

Barber’s most recent album, “Matthew Barber,” was released June 7th on Outside Music and is a throwback to the late ‘60s and early 70’s sounds with its warm, rich undertones and analog recording. Astute listeners will surely notice nods to 20th century masters like The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, The Band and Paul Simon – but the voice at the heart of each song – both as songwriter and singer – is singularly Matthew Barber. “The heart of the record is about being in a long-term relationship, trying to make sense of all that goes along with your life becoming more deeply entwined with that of another person and how that influences both your outlook on the world and your understanding of yourself.”

Louise Burns applies her influences across the board on her debut Mellow Drama, which was recently included on the Polaris Music Prize Long List. It's an album that weds ringing clarity to emotional truth over 11 originals and one gorgeously wrought cover of Leonard Cohen's "Gypsy's Wife". Even in the circling, endlessly recursive swirl of the Mazzy Star-esque “Clean” or the minatory shoe-gazey ballad “Ocean Grey”, Burns and her production cohorts Dave Ogilvie and Kevin James Maher keep it trim.

Matthew Barber is playing North Bay’s best intimate venue, the Opera Bakery Cafe, on Friday, November 11 from 8:30 pm. Tickets are available online at facebook.com/liveattheopera.
