News Release

Friends of Laurier Woods celebrated Thursday evening raising almost $80,000 towards their "Laurier Woods is Growing" campaign.

Over sixty individuals and groups had sponsored a full acre or more with another one hundred donations having been received towards a tenth of an acre or more.

Originally expecting the campaign would take several years to complete, fundraising Chair Chris Mayne said the generosity of the community reflected the high value they place on conservation areas and especially Laurier Woods located in the centre of the City.

The highlight of the evening was recognizing Dr Sheryl Riley and Dr James Trong for their very generous sponsorship of a full 10 acres. A bench will be erected adjacent to Jennings Lake, once proposed as part of the Georgian Bay, in recognition of their support.

Friends of Laurier Chair Dick Tafel was delighted with
the success of the fundraising efforts and noted that an additional twenty acres are still available for stewardship to anyone interested.

The monies raised have gone towards the purchase of 100 acres of what had been private land and will now be a part of the Laurier Woods Conservation area as well as trail maintenance and signage.
