For her entire life school teacher Julie Girard has only known her firefighting father to have facial hair, but all of that changed today when dad, Andrew, offered up his moustache for Movember.

She says seeing her dad without a moustache is very strange but this sacrifice her father has made will make a great teaching tool for her class.

“He wanted to do it for charity, but actually I’m getting married in July so I asked him to shave it for my wedding,” she explains.

“I will tell my students that charity means sacrificing something for somebody who has less.”

Girard, 49, says he has had the facial hair for about 35 years and after years of begging from his daughter to lose the stache he decided to give her a special birthday gift while helping deliver an important message at the same time.

‘Movember’ aka November sees thousands of men in Canada and around the world shaving their faces bare and growing fresh moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men's health and moreover prostate cancer.

“A lot of guys don’t go and get checked every year, you know just get your blood work done and you know it is unpleasant to talk about, and you know a lot of guys don’t – I don’t know if they are afraid to go and find out what might be wrong with them whatever, but it just takes you know half an hour. Go in see your doctor get some blood work done and early detection is a big thing.”

Girard says folks can get behind his effort by dropping donations off at Station #1 on Princess Street anytime. Note Administration hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm.
