Local Red Cross group wins Union Gas grant

Canadian Red Cross has been awarded a $1,000 Centennial Community Grant from Union Gas to support injury prevention and babysitting training to youth in our community.

Union Gas is celebrating 100 years of delivering safe, reliable and affordable service to customers and communities across Ontario in 2011. This award is one of 100 Centennial grants of $1,000 each that Union Gas is giving out to support charitable projects focused on the environment, community safety and education across the province.

“A passionate commitment to stewardship, safety and win-win relationships are all central to our business culture and operations,” said Doug French District Manager of North East region of Union Gas. “Our success as one of North America’s premier natural gas storage, transmission and distribution companies is shared with the communities we serve and we can’t think of a better way to mark this occasion than by giving back to a community program that so closely aligns with these business values.”

The goal of this partnership is to provide injury prevention and babysitting training to youth in our community. “We at the Red Cross have worked closely with outside agencies to ensure that all youth have equal opportunity to participate in this training.” says Melissa Yerlitz, First Aid Coordinator for the North Bay Branch. “We extend our thanks to Union Gas for making this training possible.”

Emergency preparedness and First Aid training beginning at this youth level reduces the risk of injury and emergency in the home alone. This cultivates youth confidence and independence while building the skills necessary to care for young children. The Red Cross is happy to be able to share this exciting step towards adulthood for youth and it is with much thanks to Union Gas that we are able to make this possible.
