Approximately 100 student leaders from the Near North District School Board’s seven secondary schools will have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills during a three day student leadership conference, Take the Lead, from Tuesday, October 11th to Thursday, October 13th, 2011. Students will participate in various activities to help build trust, communication and teamwork skills at Tim Horton’s Memorial Camp in Parry Sound.

Steven Smits, a Grade 12 student at Widdifield Secondary School, believes that “a leadership conference for students is vitally important. Students are not aware of their potential as a leader until they actually get to learn and practice the essential skills. I think a leadership camp is very important because we get the opportunity to help nurture our teenage leaders of tomorrow.”

“It is important to talk about leadership with young people because they are the future leaders of our schools, community and our world. If young people 'Take The Lead' now, they have a head start on the rest of their lives,” said Grade 12 Chippewa Secondary School Matthew Robinson.
The Near North District School Board’s Student Senate has worked hard to plan Take the Lead which will include many student-centred activities such as a low ropes course, and a fireside coffee house. Students will reflect on the value of their student voice and learn to advocate in a positive and powerful way at their individual schools. The camp will focus on bringing the leadership knowledge that they acquire back to their respective schools to make a positive difference for all.
