The NDP Party rleased a statement today that leader of the Federal New Democrats and long time public servant Jack Layton, died peacefully at 4:45 a.m. (easter time) Monday at his Toronto home.
Layton, 61, announced July 25th that he would be stepping down as leader until the hose was in session in September in order to battle a second form of cancer.
The charismatic NDP leader had batteld prostate cancer in February 2010, while continuing in his role as party leader and MP Toronto-Danforth. Followed by hip surgery shortly before the last federal election where he led his party to Official Opposition status.

We deeply regret to inform you that The Honourable Jack Layton, leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, passed away at 4:45 am today, Monday August 22.
He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Details of Mr. Layton’s funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
