OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Ocean Food Company Ltd. are warning the public not to consume the surimi-based products below, because they may be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum. Toxins produced by this bacterium may cause botulism, a life-threatening illness.

The following products, bearing Best Before dates up to and including October 18, 2011 (11OC18) are affected by this alert:

The following product, bearing a Best Before date up to and including August 29, 2011 (11AU29) is also affected by this alert:

These products have been distributed in Ontario and Quebec.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with the toxin may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, headache, double vision, dry throat, respiratory failure and paralysis. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The manufacturer, Ocean Food Company Ltd., Toronto, ON, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
