SIU investigate Mattawa MVC

On August 7, 2011 the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Mattawa received a broadcast of a stolen vehicle from Provincial Communication Centre in Smith Falls. The stolen vehicle was observed in the Town of Mattawa where police attempted to stop it. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for police and drove west on Highway 17. The male driver lost control of the vehicle and entered the ditch on the south side of the highway, where he sustained injuries.

As a result of the injuries to the driver, the OPP contacted the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and they have invoked their mandate.

As a result of the OPP investigation, the driver, James Anthieme Smith, age 47, of Laurentian Valley Township, Ontario has been charged with Possession of Stolen Property, Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code. The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay, Ontario on October 4, 2011.
