On Saturday, July 23rd, 2011 at approximately 1:00 p.m. the Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and South River-Machar Twp Fire Department responded to a fire on the CNR bridge that crosses the South River on the outskirts of the village of South River.

The fire burned several railway ties and train traffic was stopped for approximately six hours on Saturday afternoon and evening until the scene investigation was completed and the bridge deemed safe for train traffic.

The bridge is known locally as the “Iron Bridge” and is a popular place for swimming and fishing.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the OPP is asking for the public’s assistance in this case by either calling the detachment or Crimestoppers with any information.

The public is also reminded that trespassing on CNR property is against the law.
