The Municipality of Callander has been awarded a $1,000 Centennial Community Grant from Union Gas to support the Community Education Program led by the Callander Sustainable Community Committee.

Union Gas is celebrating 100 years of delivering safe, reliable and affordable service to customers and communities across Ontario in 2011. This award is one of 100 Centennial grants of $1,000 each that Union Gas is giving out to support charitable projects focused on the environment, community safety and education across the province.

“A passionate commitment to stewardship, safety and win-win relationships are all central to our business culture and operations,” said Doug French, Northeast District Manager of Union Gas. “Our success as one of North America’s premier natural gas storage, transmission and distribution companies is shared with the communities we serve and we can’t think of a better way to mark this occasion than by giving back to a community program that so closely aligns with these business values.”

The Municipality of Callander directed the funds to support environmental education programs by its Sustainable Community Committee (SCC). The committee’s first principle is to encourage the development of people and earth friendly neighbourhoods that are ecologically, socially and economically healthy. To achieve this, the SCC provided seminars to enable the residents of Callander to be educated in order to make better decisions for them as they pertain to human, natural and economic elements of the community. Funds approved were applied to the cost of enhancing the caliber of speakers/facilitators, marketing the event, and refreshments. As well, to cover the production cost for take away materials for the event.

“It was a pleasure to see the interest by Union Gas in the environmental activities in Callander and the financial contribution allows for a higher caliber presentation. This support is appreciated by the Sustainable Community Committee as well as by the residents of Callander,” states Don Clysdale, Chair, SCC.
