Suspect arrested in Wikwemikong homicide case Update

WIKWEMIKONG, ON) – The investigation in relation to the Matthew SHAWANDE homicide is continuing by members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police and the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

As a result of the continuing investigation police have now upgraded the murder charge against the accused to First Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Glen McGREGOR age 20 of the Wikwemikong First Nation, Wikwemikong was also charged on July 18, 2011 with the following offences:

- Break, Enter and Theft;
- Possession of Stolen Property under $5000; and
- Breach of Recognizance.

The accused remains in custody and will be appearing on Tuesday October 18, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Wikwemikong Provincial Criminal Court in Wikwemikong, Ontario

On July 17, 2011 at approximately 1:30 PM, Wikwemikong Tribal Police received a 9-1-1 call about a male without vital signs near a residence on Kaboni Road on the Wikwemikong Reserve.

Officers from Wikwemikong Tribal Police, and Sudbury Area Ambulance medics responded to the location where the victim, was discovered with obvious signs of trauma.

The investigation continues to be conducted by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police assisted by the OPP under the direction of Detective Inspector Martin Graham of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

WIKWEMIKONG – On Tuesday July 19, 2011 members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police and the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested and charged a Wikwemikong male in relation to the Matthew SHAWANDE homicide.

Charged is Glen McGREGOR age 20 of the Wikwemikong First Nation, Wikwemikong, Ontario. Mr. McGREGOR has been charged with the following offences.

(1) Second Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

(2) Break, Enter and Theft contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

(3) Possession of Stolen Property under $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

(4) Breach of Recognizance under contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Mr. McGREGOR remains in custody and will be appearing on Wednesday July 20, 2011 at 10:00 AM at the Wikwemikong Criminal Bail Court in Wikwemikong, Ontario

A Post Mortem Examination was conducted on Monday July 18, 2011 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital. The identity of the victim of this homicide is now confirmed to be that of Matthew Jacob SHAWANDE age 29 of the Wikwemikong First Nation.

On July 17, 2011 at approximately 1:30 PM, Wikwemikong Tribal Police received a 9-1-1 call about a male without vital signs near a residence on Kaboni Road on the Wikwemikong Reserve.

Officers from Wikwemikong Tribal Police, and Sudbury Area Ambulance medics responded to the location. A deceased male with obvious signs of trauma was discovered.

The investigation continues to be conducted by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police assisted by the OPP under the direction of Detective Inspector Martin Graham of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

Members of the OPP Forensic Identification Unit and OPP Northeast Emergency Response Team are continuing the collection of evidence at the scene.

Police are appealing to the public - if anyone has any knowledge of this crime they are asked to call police at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) where they can remain anonymous. If their information leads to an arrest they may be entitled to a cash reward.
