BURK’S FALLS – Almaguin Highlands OPP is concerned over the increasing number of All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) collisions causing injuries. Over the past few weeks officers have investigated numerous ATV collisions where the drivers have been sent to the hospital – some with life threatening injuries. Most of the collisions are occurring on local highways.

ATV drivers are reminded of the following:

• ATVs are motor vehicles according to the criminal code. Impaired driving penalties and prohibitions are the same as for any other motor vehicle. Don’t drink and drive.

• Approved helmets must be worn at all times

• No passengers are permitted on ATVs being operated on roadways

• A proper driver’s licence, registration and insurance are required to operate an ATV on a roadway

• ATV Speed Limits
o 20 km/h max where speed limit is 50 km/h or less
o 50 km/h max where speed limit is over 50 km/h

Almaguin Highlands OPP has assigned additional officers for ATV enforcement. There will be zero tolerance for people who fail to comply with ATV laws.

“Please assist the OPP in keeping our roadways and trails safe” urges A/S/Sgt Houliston. “If you suspect a driver or an ATV operator is impaired contact the police immediately and provide any of the following information – description of the driver and vehicle, its direction of travel and licence plate, if possible”.

Enjoy your summer and ride responsibly.
