Two of Canadore College's new programs have been approved and are now accepting student applications.

The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities has approved Indigenous Preparatory Studies and Indigenous Pre-Health Studies for the Fall 2011 semester.

"These two new programs are the first of their kind in Ontario. They were designed specifically to be rooted in Indigenous philosophy, tradition and culture," said Mary Wabano, Director of the Aboriginal Learning Unit. "Students will benefit from acquiring skills and knowledge from faculty and learning aids focused on Aboriginal teachings and will have direct pathways into many of our other full-time programs."

Indigenous Preparatory Studies is a one-year program that will help students find direction while learning the vital skills to make an informed decision about college education and future career paths. Graduates gain a solid understanding of Indigenous language, history, culture, wellness, mathematical applications and Aboriginal student success strategies to prepare them to meet the challenges of postsecondary education.

Indigenous Pre-Health Studies is a one-year program designed specifically for Indigenous learners to prepare them for further college studies or future careers in the health sciences sector. Graduates will learn to meet the challenges of postsecondary education and gain a solid understanding of Indigenous history, culture, wellness, Aboriginal student success strategies as well as vital science and math skills.

Canadore is also awaiting approval from the MTCU for its Environmental Management certificate program. This year Canadore has launched seven new programs in response to industry demand; Civil Engineering Technician, Financial Services, Indigenous Preparatory Studies, Indigenous Pre-Health Studies, Mobile Application Development, Rural Recreation and Public Relations.
