Officers with the Ontario Provincial Police working in the North Bay, Powassan and Mattawa Detachment including officers with the North East Highway Safety Division and Snowmobile, All-Terrain Vehicles, Vessels Enforcement (SAVE) unit were dedicated to the safety of all during this Canada Day Long Weekend which commenced on June 30, 2011 and ended on July 3, 2011.

It was another fatality-free Canada Day Long Weekend for the North Bay cluster area. Our officers issued 207 traffic related charges, 37 alcohol related, 14 small vessel regulations and 13 all-terrain vehicle related. A total of 8 motor vehicle collisions were investigated of which one resulted in personal injury involving an All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) where alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Of the 207 traffic related charges, a total of 144 were for speeding, 8 for seatbelt, 6 for distracted driving and the remainder included a variety of other Highway Traffic Act offences. As well, 2 persons were charged with Impaired/over 80; 4 person was issued a 3-day suspension and 4 persons were charged under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act (CDSA).

This weekend’s traffic related charges demonstrates our officers commitment while on patrol on our local highways, our waterways and even our trails!
