In an open letter to members today North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce President John Strang encouraged members that are impacted by the current Canada Post strike to contact MP Jay Aspin and encourage him to support the legislation.

This past Friday Mr. Aspin went on record with reporters stating that he will be backing the government and supporting back to work legislation.

“I’m supporting the government on this,” he said.

“We’ve given postal workers and Canada Post ample time to negotiate and it appears that they’ve reached an impasse, so we’re looking at the broader Canadian public here the broader economy.”

"We just campaigned on a mandate to for jobs and the economy. The economy is still fragile and we really can't allow any type of work stoppage like this to get in the way of the economic recovery."

Strang's letter is below.

Dear Members,

President John Strang would like to encourage members that are seeing difficulties in their business with the Canada Post strike to send your comments to our local MP Jay Aspin at [email protected]

Mr. Strang noted that "many small businesses are seeing problems especially with receivables, as many of their clients and/or suppliers pay by cheque through the mail; with the strike, they are finding it hard to meet payroll and payables at this time".

Please note, this Chamber, along with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has provided comments to our MP and the federal government. Please see Perrin Beatty of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce comments below:

The Chamber urges all MPs to support legislation mandating Canada Post employees to go back to work

We urge all MPs to support the legislation tabled earlier this afternoon by Labour Minister Lisa Raitt, mandating Canada Post employees to go back to work. We are hearing from chambers of commerce throughout the country that they and their member businesses are feeling the impact of having no postal service. The pain is most acute for small businesses that depend upon postal service for their supplies, cash receivables or getting their products to customers.

A disruption in postal service is a hurdle that businesses do not need and many cannot afford as they try to work their way out of the recession and through a fragile economic recovery. Many businesses are forced to find alternatives to keep themselves afloat. It is in the best interests of Canada Post, its employees and its customers to get postal service up and running again as quickly as possible.
