The Trout Creek Relay for Life raised more than $44,00 for the Canadian Cancer Society this year, raising more than $19,000 than last year thanks to the hard work by the committee, Scotia Bank, Sole Sista's, Roni Sue Young and the Chicks for Cancer who raised $4,488.00 Top 2011 Relay Team.

Many teams from nearby communities took part in the journey, held at the Trout Creek Community Centre. The teams walked continuously from 7 p.m on Friday, June 17 until 7 a.m this morning, all to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Some in the crowd were surrounding survivors, nor were they on teams. They simply came out to lend moral support to friends.

Over Thirty-four survivors dressed in yellow shirts circled the tract for the first round. Angela Johnston, was diagnosed with Cancer at the age of 50 years old for the 2nd time, Angela has been a survivor for 1 year now and took part in this years 5th Annual Trout Creek Relay in support of friends and family in the area.

She says the night's journey was about celebrating victories; it was a time to remember and a time to fight back.

"We celebrate the fact that we've made it and that we can wear those yellow shirts, and with those celebrations, we also have to remember."

There were more than 650 luminaries around the center of the track, each flame signifying someone who had lost their battle with cancer.

"We are one day closer to a cure for cancer," said Angela

Powassan Councilor Nancy Barner, who also took part in the open ceremonies, a cancer survivor herself, says the gathering is about hope. "We celebrate that we are alive."
