Recycling is getting better in the city thanks to a $900,000 investment from Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation.

The funds will help the recycling centre located at 112 Patton Street expand facilities making it an efficient work environment and in turn enabling the City of North Bay to accept and process more recyclable materials. With a new sorter and bailer in place the process has been accelerated and soon the Hazardous Waste Depot will be open year round.

Mayor Al McDonald says the upgrades are critical to increasing the life span of the landfill site as well as protecting the environment.

“With the expansion it increases capacity so we can reach out to our neighbouring commuinties and offer recycling capabilities,” he explains.

“It would be cost recovery but at least participants will save money down the road with their landfills.”

“It is not a cost … It is an investment to expand the life of our landfill site,” McDonald says of the expansion.

“It is just as important to protect the environment … I think young people get that more than older people.”

Nipissing MPP Monique Smith says the expansion is part of the provinces vision for a greener cleaner Ontario.

“I am pleased that our government continues to see recycling as a priority, and has invested in the North Bay Recycling Centre,” she said.

“Recycling is an important component of a healthy community, and the expansion of the recycling centre will ensure that more waste is diverted from our landfill.”
