Canadore is pleased to announce Roger Chum, Counsellor, as recipient of Ontario Native Education Counselling Association's (ONECA) Ontario Aboriginal Counsellor of the Year award.

Roger was recognized at the 27th Annual ONECA Conference in Toronto for his leadership and his ability to make a positive difference in the lives of Aboriginal students. The award is granted annually to a deserving individual who promotes cultural awareness, commitment to community, involvement in programming, and leadership through volunteering. Over the past 14 years at Canadore, he has been a strong advocate for Aboriginal students, helping them to recognize and realize their potential while providing them with encouragement in their academic studies.

"I am truly honoured and humbled to receive this award. I also want to recognize all of my deserving peers who make a different in the lives of Aboriginal students," said Roger. "I can't imagine anything more rewarding than supporting learners as they work hard towards earning an education to improve their lives."

The award was presented to Roger on May 18. He is also the recipient of the Employee of the Year Award for the Moose Cree Education Authority (2000) and a Canadore College Board of Governors' Employee Recognition of Excellence Award (2008). Canadore is extremely proud of Roger's example, determination, commitment and involvement within Canadore College and its surrounding Aboriginal Communities.
