Joe Lefebvre Memorial Ride for Cancer
News Release
********************
What: 17th Annual Papa Joe Ride for Cancer
Who: Don & Diana Lefebvre, family and friends
When: Saturday, May 28, 2011
Where:
9:00 a.m.: Registration at Metro Supermarket Parking Lot, 390 Lakeshore Dr.
11:00 a.m.: Ride to Mattawa
2:00 p.m.: Return
Why: After Papa Joe lost his battle with cancer in 1993, eight of his buddies got together a year later and rode their bikes in his memory. With this simple gesture, they began what would be the largest organized motorcycle ride in North-eastern Ontario.
Since 1999, the Ride has raised over $294,000 toward the building fund for the new hospital as well as for needed medical equipment.
The proceeds from this year’s ride will support our district’s diagnostic imaging needs. Papa Joe’s Memorial Ride for Cancer was the first pledge toward Seeing More Clearly, a campaign for an MRI and more. The Lefebvre’s have committed to raise $150,000 with $110,000 going toward the MRI fund. An MRI machine (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is key in the early diagnoses of many diseases including cancer. Each year more than 2700 patients have traveled elsewhere for their scans.
