Grade 11 and 12 interdisciplinary students at Widdifield Secondary School have collaborated with teachers and staff to develop the “Roar Store”, a new retail outlet that will offer school clothing, snacks, and school supplies for sale at the school. The grand opening was held at 12:15 pm, on Wednesday, May 25, 2011.

North Bay, Ontario – Students in the interdisciplinary course at Widdifield Secondary School are pleased to announce the grand opening of the “Roar Store”. The project was spearheaded by Mr. Gough, a Widdifield business teacher who recalls having a “Roar Store” at the school when he was a student in the 1980s. The initial store was initially founded in the 1970s by a spirit group led by Ms. Anne McRuer, a former teacher at Widdifield. Thirty years later, Gough feels that “re-opening the store would provide great experiential learning for students within the business and leadership programs.”

Gough explained that a unique grade eleven and twelve interdisciplinary leadership course was developed and offered this year to allow students to work collaboratively, using accounting, marketing and entrepreneurial skills to organize and develop the store. The school’s administration supported and approved the new course and provided funding for the project.

Plans were put into action some months ago for the store. The Student Activity Council office was relocated to make room for the store, and teachers and students in the Technology Department were enlisted to help. Mr. Snyder and Mr. Selander, along with students in their program built shelves, cabinets, and counter tops for the store. The custodial group at Widdifield supported by helping to prepare the room for the store. Ms. Marcotte, a Visual/Media Arts teacher, was instrumental in the creation of logo, and staff shirts. She also provided ongoing advice to students who were working with industry-standard software and technologies to create store advertising and build the store website.

Gough is really happy with how the store has come together. “I am really pleased with the work that everyone has put into this store. I see The Roar Store as a community store at Widdifield.”

In addition to the assistance from the school, the project received support from local businesses such as Staples Business Depot, The Maze, Grand & Toy, Service-Tel, Nutrition Club, Gateway Signs and Wrightway Sports.

The new school store will be open everyday during the school’s lunch hour and will be run by the students in Gough’s IDC.
