OPP investigating Pickerel Lake drowning Update

Almaguin Highlands OPP have identified the victim who drown on Pickeral Lake after the canoe he was in capsized Sunday evening. Ishan Srinivasan, 21, of Mississauga, Ontario was found on Monday.

The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a capsized canoe on Pickerel Lake in Armour Township on Sunday May 22, 2011 at 7:04pm.

Ambulance attended and treated two males for hypothermia at the scene. Burk’s Falls Fire Department assisted at the scene as well.

Almaguin Highlands OPP attended and spoke with witnesses who had observed the canoe capsize and had immediately rendered assistance to the involved parties using their own vessels. Witnesses advised that three males were observed in the canoe prior to it capsizing. Two were rescued from the water by witnesses.

The third male, 21 of Mississauga, was not located that evening and was deemed missing. Information received was that the male had not been wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident.

The Almaguin Highlands OPP Marine Unit and the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (U.S.R.U.) continued the investigation on Monday May 23. The missing male was located and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The next-of-kin have been notified. The deceased’s name and the cause of death will be released following a post-mortem.
