A Canadore College Aviation student brought home gold from the Ontario Technological Skills Competition held in Waterloo, Ont. at the RIM Centre last week.

The skills competition, held from April 30 to May 1, attracted over 1,800 competitors and 30,000 spectators from across the province. There were over 60 contests in which elementary, secondary and postsecondary level students tested their skills and abilities against industry standards.

Canadore Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance student Ryan Spurrell competed in the postsecondary Aircraft Maintenance competition against a number of students from other Ontario colleges.

"The competition was an opportunity for me to test my skills outside of the classroom. The provincial contest was challenging, but I knew what I had to do to win gold thanks to my professors. I can't wait for the next leg of the competition," said Spurrell.

Spurrell was awarded the gold medal in his category and was invited to join Team Ontario at Skills Canada National Competition in Quebec City, Que. from June 1 to 4.

These contests allow participants to showcase their skills, talent and knowledge while providing many networking opportunities with partners from industry, labour, government and education.

Spurrell will be graduating on May 13 from the Aviation Technician - Aircraft Maintenance program. He will be returning to his hometown of Haley Station, Ont. to begin working full-time at Timber Wolf Aviation Ltd. the following week.

Other notable mentions include Kyle Laplante of the Culinary Skills - Chef Training program, and Miles Bailey of the Culinary Administration program, who placed 7th and 10th in the postsecondary Culinary Arts competition in which there was over 20 competitors.
