Green Party Candidate says he’d do it all again

Watching the results come in at Nipissing-Timiskaming Green Party Candidate Dr. Scott Daley’s home Monday night there were a number of gasps of disbelief as the group witnessed the Harper Conservatives were swept to a majority government.

“We see obviously the Conservatives did better than projected nationally so we’ll see,” says Daley.

“We are going to wake up tomorrow with buyers regret,” said Green Campaign Manager Craig Bridges.

While another supporter stated “I’m losing faith in my country.”

While the Greens didn’t move out of last place in this riding Daley is pleased to see their leader Elizabeth May win her seat. Daley says they ran a good campaign and thinks the Green message is starting to be heard at the local level.

“I’d do it again for sure,” he says.

“It’s been a really good experience by going and knocking on people’s doors and talking to people and getting to know kind of the riding and areas surrounding North Bay. So that’s been really positive for sure.”

Canadians made history yesterday by electing Green Party leader Elizabeth May as our first Green MP. Voters in Saanich-Gulf Islands have opened a new chapter in Canadian politics. Electing Greens is not only possible, it is doable.

Elizabeth will be a strong voice for a sustainable future and bring a breath of fresh air and decorum to the House of Commons. She tapped into a strong desire for positive change, a new way of doing politics.

With this seat, the Green Party will never be excluded again. We are a permanent part of Canada's democracy. Exclusion from the leaders' debate meant that 4.3 million voters who watched the debate did not have an opportunity to see what voters in Saanich-Gulf Islands did: a bold Green vision with practical policies to improve our great country. Canadians deserve better at all levels of government, and we have another opportunity for change in the provincial election this fall in Ontario.

Ontario Greens are eager to build on this historic moment. There is clearly a strong desire for a fresh, new approach to politics. Ontarians want more local democracy and fewer political insiders. The old parties have had their chance. It's time to move beyond the cynicism and hyper-partisanship. It's time to embrace a positive, sustainable future.

Elizabeth has taken the first step. Ontario Greens are ready to take
the next. It's time!

Mike Schreiner
Leader, Green Party of Ontario
