The Near North District School Board is celebrating Education Week in many ways, May 2-6, 2011. The theme for Education Week this year in Ontario is ‘Learning Together, Succeeding Together.’ Students from across the district will be involved in many activities from showcasing student art work to bullying prevention.

A focus on the Arts is central to many activities taking place in Near North schools throughout Education Week. Mattawa District Public School welcomes Aboriginal artist Michael Cywink this week. On Wednesday, May 4th at 6:30 p.m., student artwork, created to represent living in the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve, will be on display during Arts Night at William Beatty Public School in Parry Sound. Student work will be on display at a Gallery Walk on Thursday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m. at Sunset Park Public School. Parents and family members will have an opportunity to view posters, quilts, cartoon strips and technology projects.

Also happening during Education Week is the selection of two students for Youth of the Year during the Photovoice Gala on May 3 in North Bay. The Near North District School Board extends congratulations to nominees Almaguin Highlands student Steven Hepburn, Chippewa student Sandra Brownlee and West Ferris student Sam Webb.

South River Public School students will learn about bullying prevention throughout the week by participating in activities and discussions around bullying behavior and strategies to deal with a bully.

The Near North District School Board is proud to celebrate student achievement and teaching excellence during Education Week, and every week throughout the year.
