Government supports work experience for 6,200 northern students

Through Ontario’s summer jobs program, about 6,200 Northern Ontario students will find jobs and gain important work experience this summer to help them succeed in their future career.

Providing additional support to help more students explore the workplace was part of Ontario’s 2011 Budget -Turning the Corner, to create new opportunity, economic growth and support services Ontario families rely on such as education and training.

The summer jobs program is part of the Open Ontario plan to help every student succeed and build a knowledge-based economy for the future.

QUICK FACTS

 The 2011 Budget - Turning The Corner, invests an additional $1.8 million in Northern Ontario’s Summer Jobs Service, bringing the total investment to nearly $5.2 million in wage subsidies.

 Last summer, the government helped more than 130,000 Ontario students find jobs. This summer, it is expected than approximately 200,000 Ontario students will be offered a job opportunity.

 One of several Ontario summer jobs programs, the Summer Jobs Service provides a $2 per hour incentive to encourage employers to hire students.

 Employers in Northern Ontario have until April 30 to apply for the subsidy.

 Students aged 15 to 30 who are planning to return to school in the fall are eligible.
