There's still time to apply for your Northern Ontario Energy Credit

Northern Ontario residents still have time to get their money back for home energy costs.

People who qualify for the Northern Ontario Energy Credit can still claim payment under the 2010 program. Deadline for submitting an application is June 30, 2011. More than 123,000 northern households have already applied and received the credit but tens of thousands more may be still eligible to get money back.


The permanent annual credit was introduced in the 2010 Ontario Budget to help families and individuals in the North, where energy costs tend to be higher. Northerners must apply to receive the 2010 credit, which provides up to $130 for a single adult and up to $200 for families, including single parents.

Northern Ontario residents can check their eligibility by visiting Ontario.ca/northernenergycredit. Applications are available online or at ServiceOntario locations throughout the North.

The Northern Ontario Energy Credit is part of the province's five-year Open Ontario plan to enhance job creation and boost economic growth across the province.

QUICK FACTS

The annual energy credit will provide about $35 million in assistance to 250,000 families and single people, or over half of all northerners.

The energy credit is available to eligible residents of Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Timiskaming districts.

For 2011 and subsequent years, the Northern Ontario Energy Credit will be part of the personal income tax return.
