Fire crews were called to a structure fire at Crossroads Co-operative Homes at 470 Bunting Drive Thursday evening.

Firefighters from all three stations responded to the call shortly after 7pm and arrived to find smoke and flames visible. Crews located the fire and immediately began to attack it.

“There were reports of smoke and the crews could actually see it upon arrival,” says Deputy Fire Chief Brian Hunt.

Hunt tells BayToday that details are limited at this time and the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office has been called in to investigate.

“At this time they (firefighters) are still completing their operations. We do have one of our investigators on site, North Bay Police is here and they'll begin their investigation.”

Residents were evacuated from the 35 unit complex due to concerns of a possible gas leak as well as the fire spreading to other units.

“Any type of multistory type building where there are major occupancies like this our process is to try and keep the fire under control so it doesn't spread as quickly as possible.”

“You can appreciate when you have something really going and you have a lot of radiant heat, you have a fairly quick heat spread in that particular process, so that's why our guys hit is with lots of water and heavy master streams and got it under control pretty quick.”
