OTTAWA - One Canadian soldier was killed when an improvised explosive device detonated during a dismounted partnered patrol in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar Province at approximately 12 p.m. (noon) Kandahar time on Sunday, March 27, 2011.

Killed in action was Corporal Yannick Scherrer, from 1er Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment, based at CFB Valcartier, Quebec serving with 1er Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment Battle Group.

We are all thinking of the family and friends of our Canadian fallen comrade during this sad time.

We will not forget Cpl Scherrer's sacrifice as we continue to bring security and hope to the people of Kandahar Province.

Canada in partnership with the government of Afghanistan, the Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF remain committed to improving the security situation in order to set the conditions for reconstruction and development in the region.

Joint Task Force Afghanistan, continues to be fully engaged in an initiative that serves to gradually enhance security, to strengthen governance and to expand the government's authority in key areas of Kandahar Province.

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper issued the following statement today on the death of a Canadian soldier:

"I join all Canadians in mourning the loss of Corporal Yannick Scherrer, who was killed by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Afghanistan. Our sympathies are with his loved ones, friends and colleagues on this tragic day. The entire country is deeply saddened by your loss.

"The relentless commitment of Corporal Scherrer and other brave Canadians in Afghanistan is a source of pride to all Canadians.

"We will forever be grateful for the sacrifice made by Corporal Scherrer."

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement upon learning of the death of Cpl. Yannick Scherrer who was serving the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan:

“Like all Canadians, I was grieved to learn of the passing of Cpl. Scherrer, who lost his life while working to ensure that the Afghan people can build a better future for themselves.”

Cpl. Yannick Scherrer of Montreal was killed by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol near Nakhonay, southwest of Kandahar city. He was 24 years old.

“We owe a deep debt of gratitude to all the Canadian men and women who have lost their lives in Afghanistan as part of our NATO mission. Dedicated soldiers like Cpl. Scherrer have brought security and development to a troubled land, and freed it from a repressive regime. We are incredibly proud of their service.”

“On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada, my deepest condolences go to the family and friends of Cpl Scherrer, and to the entire Canadian Forces family for their loss.”

Statement by New Democrat Leader Jack Layton

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Corporal Yannick Scherrer, of Montreal. A member of the 1st battalion of the Royal 22nd regiment (the Van Doos) the 24 year old was killed by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol near Nakhonay, southwest of Kandahar City.

The sad news serves to remind us all of the danger that so many Canadians representing our country abroad face each and every day. It is with courage and honour that they put their lives on the line to serve our country. For their service and sacrifice we are deeply grateful.

On behalf of all New Democrats, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Corporal Scherrer. They, along with the loved ones of all members of the Canadian Forces are in our thoughts and prayers.
