It’s a very brave person who comes through the door

The North Bay Literacy Council recently hosted their annual 'Scrabble Challenge' an event aimed at raising awareness and promoting literacy in the community.

Jane Jackson, Executive Coordinator of the North Bay Literacy Council, has been promoting literacy for over twenty years and says illiteracy impacts every part of a person’s life. She says accessing help can be intimidating but folks need to know that the Literacy Council is here to help and support them.

“It’s an awareness raising and we want to tell everybody about what the work the Literacy Council does,” she explains.

“To tell everyone about the adult literacy problem in not just our community but across the province, and how they can help, if people want to volunteer about our parent workshops we just want the word out there.”

“It affects everybody and every walk of life; your health, your children and so we want everyone to know that, we want to give them some ideas on what they can do to help their kids or if they want to volunteer to help someone else.”

“It’s very intimidating, sometimes we have people go by our office 3 or 4 times before they have the nerve to come in, but once they come through the door, that’s the scariest part, and after that it’s easy.”

“It’s a very brave person who comes through the door and we’re there to help them.”
