GNSC launches French learning unit

The Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council (GNSC) released the French edition of its “Primary School Educational Unit” today, at the Conseil Scolaire Catholique Franco-Nord Board Office. The educational unit will be used by teachers and integrated into the Grade 2 curriculum.

The Unit speaks to the importance of the Lake to the area, species of fish/wildlife/forest resources/economics/tourism features that the Lake provides, at a level appropriate to the students ages. The Unit or ‘kit’ is a complete teaching aid, including lesson plans, activities, educational games, an interactive story book and quiz/testing materials for the teacher and school children to make use of.

Council Chair, John Thornton, stated that “The natural resources of Lake Nipissing and the surrounding area are of paramount importance to the economy and way of life here.”

Thornton added “We were able to produce a product that meets the specific requirements of the curriculum and addresses the importance of the Lake and surrounding natural resources.”

This effort coincides with developmental educational goals for students as well as specific action plans towards educating the public on natural resources as mentioned in the Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) Lake Nipissing Fisheries Management Plan.

The English edition of the Unit was previously distributed to area schools in March, 2007.
