A new collaborative effort is bringing vital skills training to Nipissing First Nation.

Canadore College along with Nipissing First Nation have partnered to offer the Pre-Construction Worker Training Program which started last month.

Fourteen Aboriginal students have been accepted in to the program which is designed to teach students the skills needed to gain employment as a labourer in the construction industry and how to work effectively with their co-workers. Participants will obtain the hands-on knowledge that is critical to working safely and efficiently within a residential construction worksite.

"This community-based training partnership is vital to the community, and helps to reposition the College to strategically develop capacity through partnerships and innovation," said George Burton, President of Canadore College.

The program will take place at Nbisiing Secondary School, Nipissing First Nation until mid-March and includes three weeks of hands-on training in the community.

The partnership was established between Nipissing First Nation and Canadore College to develop a program to meet the training needs of the community. It is funded through Individual Skills Enhancement Program, Service Canada and area First Nations.

"It is certainly a priority to train our youth with workplace skills to meet the labour market needs of our community as we move forward with some major construction projects in Nipissing First Nation," said Tom Lambert, Economic Development Officer, Nipissing First Nation.

Canadore is committed to providing relevant programming and training for a skilled workforce in response to community and regional needs.
