With the arrival of Bonhomme Carnaval the Le Centre culturel Les Compagnons des francs loisirs opened the 48th annual Le Carnaval at Memorial Gardens Sunday. The opening ceremonies featured the talents of area Francophone students celebrating French heritage and culture.

Denise Lefebvre, who is co-chairing this year’s Carnival with husband Greg, says it takes a great deal of planning to bring the event together.

This year's King (Francois Racette, 17) and Queen (Dawn Therrien, 17) both say they are thrilled to be part of such an important event.

"I always wanted to become King of Carnaval to represent the French community," says Racette, Grade 12 student at École secondaire catholique Algonquin.

"I actually wanted to do it," explains Therrien, Grade 12 students at École secondaire catholique Algonquin.

"I get to represent all of the French community of North Bay and my school community."

Nipissing MPP Monique Smith agrees that Le Carnaval is an important celebration for the Francophone community.
