The North Bay Police Service and Ontario Provincial
Police officers have continued their efforts in increasing awareness and enforcement out on the trails with anglers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The second half of the month, January 16 - 31, resulted in a continuum of charges.

Motorized Snow Vehicle Act (MSVA) 6

Liquor Licence Act (LLA) 2

Environment Act 0

Controlled Drug Substance Act (CDSA) 8

On January 31, 2011 at approximately 2:30 a.m., both officers attended the area of the Goose Islands of Lake Nipissing to locate and rescue three individuals that had been earlier reported as missing. Another incident, our officers located five males in possession of a controlled substance. All five were charged and are scheduled to appear for court in North Bay on February 22, 2011. Two men were also charged with fishing without a licence.

A reminder that an ice hut may be considered a private place since it is an indoor place to which the public is not ordinarily permitted.

Apparently most (if not all) huts have padlocks on them; this is consistent with the view that they are private places. Further, ice huts must be registered under s. 37 of O. Reg. 664/98 to Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997, S.O. 1997, c. 41, thereby giving their location a degree of recognition or legitimacy. For these reasons the consumption of alcohol inside the ice hut is legal, keeping in mind you still have to get home safely!
