Canadore executives are banging their heads together trying to reverse the decline of student registration. A regular meeting is held by the Board of Governors every second Tuesday of the month to discuss the budget and current events.

With new college President, George Burton, now in position, changes are being made. Topics discussed at last night’s meeting ranged from increasing student fees, grants, the new Harris Library, and new student programs. Burton confirms that although certain fees may be going up, so will the quality of their education.

“We discussed many topics here tonight,” said President Burton. “New programs, new student fees, and also a wonderful initiative from our student leader, which is big part of the college experience. The fees that are increasing are for take away materials, they do not go directly to the college, but to the individual programs in question.”

Although Canadore hit a record high of student enrolment for the Winter 2011 semester, with a 54% increase to the previous year, there is still much work to be done to keep the students interested. CRSC Student President Spencer Fry says they are doing everything they can to get students more involved in campus activities.

“For students, CRSC is in the process of raising awareness of what CSRC can do for them,” explained Fry. “We want to keep them informed of subsidized services we can offer them, as well as what the college has to offer students.”

“We want to hear from students, we need to know what they want from us to be able to deliver. Last year the voter turnout was only 300 students, this year we’re aiming for 450, which still isn’t much, but we’re promoting it with free coffee or hot chocolate, as well as a ballot to win an IPad.”

Other matters revised included grants and donations being collected by the college in an effort to ease student life when attending the college. Material donations are estimated to be between $3-5 million, but they have only seen roughly $100,000 in contributed materials from corporate and individual sponsors.

Discussions continue again at the next regular public board meeting being held Tuesday, February 15th, at 7 p.m. at the Canadore College Main Campus.
