Last week, Canadore College broke its winter intake enrolment record as it welcomed 215 first-year students for the Winter 2011 term. This growth represents a 54 per cent increase in student registration in comparison to the previous year.

Shawn Chorney, Canadore's Acting Vice-President, Student Services and Human Resources said that the enrolment increase is largely due to a concerted team effort to improve student learning access and pathways.

"We are increasingly tailoring our programming to be flexible to students' needs. Canadore offers many modes of delivery, including traditional in-class, distance and online formats. Every academic term we aim to be ready for our students when they are, not the other way around."

New classes began this month in the Schools of Business, Health Sciences, Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts, Recreation and Leisure Services, Preparatory Studies, and Skilled Trades. The Practical Nursing program was filled to capacity this January, proving this program continues to be a popular career choice.

New student Caralee Smith took the January intake option for the wait-listed PN program. Smith became interested in the health field after taking care of her husband as he recovered from colon cancer.

"I've kind of been a nurse in training for the last year. I love taking care of people. And Canadore was the natural choice, because I live here. The whole experience has been fantastic. I specifically like the lab, getting hands-on experience and meeting new friends," said Smith.

Retention numbers are also up at the College with an 82.2 per cent student retention rate. Canadore is proud to be the college of choice for so many students as they seek to acquire the skills they need to obtain meaningful employment.

"Canadore confidently delivers relevant, flexible and timely programming as students and employers continue to recognize the benefits of obtaining an education focused on innovation, practical knowledge and technical skills," said George Burton, President of Canadore College. "We are dedicated to offering quality programs supported by equally strong services to promote an environment of student-centred success."
