Near North Crime Stoppers (NNCS) experienced a record year in 2010. Statistics across the board were up, in part due to the introduction of Web Tip and Tip Texting options. These 2 new methods to submit information anonymously proved to be very popular.

According to Board Chairperson, Peter Rooney, there’s no surprise about the number one issue again this year, ‘That is the recovery of illegal drugs’. According to Mr. Rooney, ‘Board figures show over $4.3 million in illegal drugs have been recovered by the police, thanks to anonymous tips received. The total of illegal drugs seized, since the inception of NNCS in 1988, is a staggering 48.3 million dollars.

One of the NNCS police coordinators, OPP Constable Mike Szarka, points out that tips also led to the recovery of $190,000 in property, to bring that total close over $3.4 million. Constable Szarka stated that, “anonymous information also led to the arrest of 28 persons in 2010, bringing the total number to 1,371 since NNCS began in 1988.” Constable Szarka also adds, that, “There were 678 new tips received over the past year, totaling 12,690 since 1988.

NNCS Executive Director, Tracy Balen, reminds the public, “The non-profit organization is one of 1,200 programs in communities around the world that highlight accomplishments during the month of January. Anyone with information about a crime can call 476-8477 or 1-800-222-8477. The secure, encrypted online tip form is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.nearnorthcrimestoppers.com . Information can also be provided by texting ‘NIPPER’ followed by the tip information to CRIMES (274637).”

The public is invited to Northgate Shopping Centre on January 21st and 22nd to meet NNCS board members and to learn more about this valuable community program.
