Recently the students and staff at Sunset Park Public School welcomed renowned native artist Moses (Amik) Beaver as their artist in residence.

Beaver, a First Nations artist from the fly-in reserve of Summer Beaver, was at the school for two weeks at the end of November conducting a series of workshops with students designed to bring cultural awareness and appreciation of First Nations art.

In collaboration with the students he created a number of large murals (pictured in the photo gallery), which will be on permanent display in the school library.

Beaver’s paintings are distinct for their multilayered approach, which embeds colourful images of spirits, human faces and animal forms.

Students also had the opportunity to host their first gallery show which featured the inspirational artwork they had been working on.

Beaver’s visit was an initiative made possible through the Ontario Arts Council.
