If you decide to drink and drive they'll be ready for you

North Bay Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police along with Mayor Al McDonald and community partners (MADD and Operation Red Nose) kicked off the holiday season with a Joint Forces Festive R.I.D.E Lane Friday night.

The OPP came with their new multifunctional Mobile Support Unit to demonstrate that they can conduct a precise road side test in the field, charge and process anyone who is in breach of the law.

OPP Inspector Mark Andrews says the R.I.D.E. program is one of the most effective ways to remove impaired drivers from the roadway. Noting the new legislation that came into effect December 1st Andrews tips his hat to province for stepping up and providing the tools and legislation to take impaired drivers off the road.

The new 7-day vehicle impoundment will apply to drivers whose licences are suspended for:

- Driving while under certain Highway Traffic Act licence suspensions including non-payment of family support

- Driving with a blood alcohol concentration over .08 (beyond the legal limit) or for failing/refusing to provide a breath sample

- Driving without an ignition interlock device when one is required.

Andrews says for drivers who decide to make the poor choice to drink and drive the police are ready for them.
